Maret Samuel Sueken’s life journey began in Dusun Parang Bobbo, a remote hamlet at the foot of Mount Bawakaraeng, Tonasa Village, Tombolo Pao District, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi. Born into a modest farming family, he grew up in a rural environment with limited access to education. During his school years, he walked approximately five kilometers each day to attend school. These challenges shaped his perseverance, discipline, and strong determination to pursue education and build a better future.
Maret Samuel Sueken is an Indonesian electrical engineer, corporate governance practitioner, and energy infrastructure specialist with more than 25 years of professional experience in the oil and gas, energy, and large-scale infrastructure sectors. His career has been shaped through extensive involvement in EPCIC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Commissioning) projects in complex offshore and onshore environments.
He comes from a Makassar–Balinese family background; his father, I Nyoman Sueken, was a migrant from Bali, while his mother, Daeng Nappa Patau Gessa, is a native of Makassar. Maret completed his primary education at SDI Parang Bobbo in 1990, continued to SMP Negeri Tombolo Pao, and graduated in 1993. He then moved to Makassar to pursue his secondary education at STM Kartika Bhakti Makassar, majoring in Electrical Engineering, graduating in 1996. Driven by his passion for the electrical field, he continued his studies in the Diploma Program in Electrical Engineering at Hasanuddin University Polytechnic (now Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang), completing it in 1999. To maintain a linear academic path in his field of interest, he resumed his higher education in 2024 at Universitas Sains Indonesia to pursue a bachelor’s degree (S1) in Electrical Engineering.
In the same year he completed his diploma, Maret began his professional journey by moving to Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, where he worked for a local contractor as a technician, designer, and engineer. A year later, he joined the French EPC company Cegelec – PT Indokomas Buana Perkasa (Vinci Energies). This opportunity marked the starting point of his long-standing professional career in the EPCIC industry, which has since developed over more than two decades through involvement with major EPCC companies and international energy projects.
Throughout his engineering career, Maret has contributed to numerous large-scale projects operated by leading international energy companies, including TOTAL E&P Indonesie, Hess Corporation, PETRONAS Carigali, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Premier Oil, HCML, and Pertamina. He has held various technical leadership roles such as Project Manager, Commissioning Manager, Hook-Up Manager, Interface Manager, Construction Manager, and Start-Up Manager, focusing on the integration of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems in offshore facilities and industrial installations.
He has also worked with a wide range of global EPC contractors, offshore fabrication companies, and international engineering consultants, including McDermott, Saipem, Chiyoda, SMOE, Punj Lloyd, Sempec, Nisconi, Amec Foster Wheeler, Worley, Technip, Sofresid, Synergy Engineering, Yokogawa, Honeywell, Jetec, and Indokomas / Cegelec – Vinci, as well as leading Indonesian fabrication companies such as PT Timas Suplindo, Gunanusa Utama Fabricators, Meindo Elang Indah, and Bakrie Construction. Through these engagements, he has gained extensive experience in offshore platform fabrication, installation, commissioning, system integration, and operational readiness of large-scale energy infrastructure facilities.
After more than a decade working across international energy projects, Maret continued his professional career in Jakarta starting in 2011, gradually taking on broader leadership responsibilities in corporate governance and oversight.
In 2022, he was appointed as Independent Commissioner of PT Djakarta Lloyd (Persero), a state-owned enterprise in the maritime logistics sector. In 2024, he was again entrusted by the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia to serve as Independent Commissioner and Chairman of the Audit Committee at PT Rekayasa Industri (Rekind), one of Indonesia’s leading EPC companies. In addition, he serves as Commissioner of PT Cahaya Fajar Kaltim, a regional enterprise managing strategic electricity infrastructure in East Kalimantan.
Beyond his roles in engineering and corporate governance, Maret actively contributes to national development, including participation in the development of Indonesia’s new capital city (Ibu Kota Nusantara/IKN) through his involvement as an expert on projects managed by PT PP (Persero) and PT PLN (Persero).
He is also actively engaged in public policy initiatives and community development. He is the Founder and Chairman of JPKP (Jaringan Pendamping Kebijakan Pembangunan), a civil society network focused on assisting and monitoring public services and community advocacy across Indonesia. He also serves as a Standing Committee Member for the Electricity Sector at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) of East Kalimantan, contributing to discussions on regional energy policy and strategic infrastructure development.
Academically, Maret began his technical education at a vocational high school (STM) majoring in Electronics, before pursuing a Diploma in Electrical Engineering at Hasanuddin University Polytechnic. He later continued his undergraduate studies in Electrical Engineering at Universitas Sains Indonesia, focusing his research on electrical system integration to support the development of Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN).
His professional development is further strengthened by certifications in corporate governance, risk oversight, and enterprise risk management, including Certified Governance Oversight Professional (CGOP), Qualified Risk Governance Professional (QRGP), and Certified Global Risk & Compliance Executive Officer (CGRCEO).
By combining strong engineering expertise, leadership in corporate governance, and active involvement in public policy, Maret Samuel Sueken continues to contribute to the development of energy infrastructure, industrial growth, and the strengthening of governance practices in Indonesia.
