Acclaimed producer and director Hanung Bramantyo together with production house Dapur Film, officially announced his highly anticipated new project: "DESCENDANTS OF THE SUN".
For the first time in the world, the global hit Korean drama will be adapted into a feature film, with Indonesia becoming the first country to bring it to the big screen.
This epic project marks an international collaboration between Indonesian and South Korean studios. The partners include Dapur Film, RFA, NEWKO Global Entertainment, alongside leading South Korean entertainment companies NEW, Barunson C&C, D BAY FILM FACTORY SDN. BHD, and Indonesian production houses Dwi Warna Sentosa (Tobali Film) & Piring Langit.
Barunson E&A will handle international sales, while Contents Panda, a subsidiary of NEW, will oversee distribution in South Korea.
A World-Class Adaptation with an Indonesian Identity
The original "Descendants of the Sun" was produced by NEW, directed by Lee Eung-bok, and written by Kim Eun-sook & Kim Won-suk. The series has been exported to 32 countries and watched in nearly 100 countries via global OTT platforms.
This Indonesian film version is more than just an adaptation. It carries a distinct Indonesian identity and storyline, while staying true to the core romance of two individuals from different professions and ideals.
"The process took quite a long time, and I’m finally happy to announce this international collaboration. We have wrapped filming. I am pleased to announce that the film will be released in 2027 in Indonesian cinemas, featuring the incredible talents of the Indonesian film industry," said Director Hanung Bramantyo.
Reza Rahadian & Dian Sastrowardoyo Unite for the First Time as Lead Couple
The film stars Indonesia’s most celebrated actors: Reza Rahadian, Dian Sastrowardoyo, and Eva Celia. The full cast will be announced soon.
Hanung chose Reza and Dian as the leads because they represent two of Indonesia’s greatest actors, beloved by audiences nationwide. Notably, this is the first time Reza and Dian will star together as a romantic lead couple in one title.
"Mas Hanung is like an older brother to me. We’ve been working together since _Perempuan Berkalung Sorban_ (2009). So this isn’t just a reunion... I could never say no to Mas Hanung," said Reza Rahadian.
"Dian and I have known each other for a long time in the industry... But this is the first time we’ve truly been paired together as co-leads with a love interest. I’m very excited," said Dian Sastrowardoyo.
Eva Celia also joins the stellar cast. "I was so nervous at first, especially because this role presents its own challenges. But Mas Hanung created such a comfortable space in his direction, so I felt free to explore the character," said Eva.
